Recently, a colleague lamented that her dog had terrible flea problems, even though she had applied a topical flea treatment. She gave him baths and used a flea comb religiously in an attempt to alleviate the problem. As a last resort, her husband and she thought they may need to treat the backyard with a flea chemical.
I cautioned her against the use of chemicals before the topical treatment had “ran its course.” Exposure to flea pesticides can create very serious problems for your pet. Topical treatment, followed by a flea dip, followed by exposure to a backyard treatment, and so forth can overload your poor pet. If he or she survives the experience, you will be lucky. At best, he or she will be very sick.
Fortunately, she was already aware of the dangers. Her tale is good one to share, though, because not everyone is aware of how potent these treatments are. As painful as it is, you cannot continue to layer flea treatments on your pet and around his or her environment.
If you have a serious flea infestation, talk with your vet about the best course of action to take. Be sure to tell him or her about any treatments you have applied to your pet. Maybe it is something as simple as switching to a different flea treatment product. It is worth the health and safety of your pet to have that conversation. Do not try to solve the problem on your own.
Eliminating fleas usually does not happen overnight. With help from your vet, you can create a plan to deal with the problem.

Congratulations to the Avery County Humane Society
We adopted Gracie from the Avery County Humane Society. It is a bit far from our home. We wanted a Jack Russell terrier, though. It seemed that every time we found one nearby, he or she was adopted before we could get there. That’s when we decided to try searching on Petfinder.com.
The shelter staff was very nice. When we got lost trying to find the shelter, one of the workers drove to us and led us back to the shelter.
Since adopting Gracie, we have kept the shelter on our radar. In their June newsletter, they had a great announcement. They have been striving for some time to become a “no kill” shelter. They have not euthanized an adoptable animal since last August.
In a perfect world, animals would never be euthanized. The reality is some shelters face hard choices on a daily basis. There are not enough homes. Congratulations to the Avery County Humane Society for trying hard to become a no-kill shelter.
In the newsletter, they tell about some of the creative ways they have succeeded in this effort. To read all about it, here is a link to the newsletter: http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs050/1103595218136/archive/1109942438363.html
Congratulations again!

A Visit to Brother Wolf's ReTail Store and Grooming Salon
Gracie was in bad need of a pawdicure, so I thought I would give Brother Wolf’s new grooming salon a try. After all, the proceeds go back to the shelter.
When we arrived, another lady had brought her Golden mix puppy. The dog looked wonderful. The groomer did a great job.
Gracie was a little skittish about her nail grinding. The groomer let me hold Gracie. None of the other groomers have ever allowed me to do that, so I was thrilled. Gracie was much more manageable with her Mommy nearby.
The cost of a nail grinding is $10, slightly cheaper than I have paid at other places. Again, the service was great. I will definitely return.
A few words of advice: be sure to call in advance for an appointment. The groomer has another job; she works at Brother Wolf only when she has appointments there. The other piece of advice is to check the register before you leave. When I was there, they had $10 discount coupons on grooming services.
Go to http://www.bwar.org/retail for a complete list of the services they offer and costs for each service. Call 828-575-2411 to make an appointment.

Re-Tail Store Grand Opening & 3rd Anniversary Celebration
Tomorrow is a big day for Brother Wolf. It is the third anniversary of the adoption center’s opening. The group has been around longer; they did not always have an official shelter.
It is also the grand opening of their new Re-Tail Store. The store is located across the street from the shelter. If you are familiar with the area, it is in the building where the previous tenant had all those nasty “keep the pets away” signs. Karma.
The party is from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. You can tour the shelter and enjoy free refreshments and nail trims (for your buddy, not you). At the Second Chances Thrift Store (just up the street), select items will be 30 percent off.
Proceeds from the new Re-Tail Store and the Second Chances Thrift Store provide much-needed funds to Brother Wolf. Remember, Brother Wolf does not receive any government assistance. They rely on community support and funds from ventures like these.
You can learn more about the grooming services they will offer at the Store. In fact, you might want to take a peek. Visit the shelter’s website at bwar.org and click on the Re-Tail Store and Grooming page. The prices are very reasonable. You must call for an appointment, though. The groomer only comes to the store when she has appointments.
If you are looking for something to do Saturday afternoon, drop by the shelter complex. The hard-working staff at BWAR has made some great improvements to the shelter. The new store is really nice.
Hope to see you there on Saturday!

Volunteer Opportunities
Recently, a colleague and I discussed her son. He wanted to adopt a dog. His mother cautioned against it because he works very long hours and would not have time for the dog. I mentioned that, if her son wanted interaction with dogs, he should consider volunteering at Brother Wolf’s shelter. He could have lots of fun without the day-to-day commitment of having a canine companion.
Brother Wolf has a variety of opportunities. They have something for every skill or interest you may have.
At the adoption center, cats and dogs could use a cuddle. Dogs love a walk or a game of fetch. Laundry always piles up there too, so you could grab a load and take it home with you.
Also, Brother Wolf has created a special room at their new Re-Tail store. Far away from the noise of the shelter, you can take a dog and spend some time just hanging out. This gives the dog a break from the chaos and allows him or her to relax in a setting similar to a real home. If you have physical limitations that prevent you from taking a long walk with a dog, this opportunity is perfect for you.
New to the area? Join the Outward Hounds Hiking Club! On Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings, a team of volunteers take dogs from the shelters on hikes in the area. You can explore new trails, and your canine buddy gets exercise and a much-needed change of scenery.
Is it time for a belated spring cleaning? Bring your gently-used items to the Second Chances Thrift Store. You can even volunteer to work at the store for a few hours.
Please note that all volunteers must complete an application and attend an orientation. If you are under 16, you must be accompanied by a guardian and might not be allowed to walk certain dogs.
Regardless of your age, physical abilities, or skills, Brother Wolf has an opportunity for you. To learn more, call 828-503-3440 or 828-808-9435.
Don’t live in the Asheville area? I am sure a shelter or rescue group near you could use similar help. Why not give them a call?

Update
Recently, I spotlighted two dogs who needed homes – a miniature schnauzer at the Avery County Humane Society and a Yorkie at Brother Wolf. I am happy to report that both dogs have been adopted.
Of course, there are lots more dogs who need homes. These two dogs highlight the fact that you can find purebred as well as mixed breed dogs at shelters. At Animal Compassion Network (animalcompassionnetwork.org), they have a Boston Terrier. Brother Wolf has one on their website too.
I spotted a cute poodle named Cloud at Brother Wolf a few days ago. By the weekend, they groomed her and posted a picture of her on their website. It looks as if the cutie has been adopted.
In fact, if you are serious about getting a certain type of dog, I would encourage you to visit your local shelter several times a week. I have seen several dogs at Brother Wolf who never make it to the website. Someone strolls through the shelter before they get a chance to even post the dog. That is fantastic news. It makes things a little more difficult for you, though, if you are determined to get a certain breed.
Just remember one thing: good things come to those who wait.

Give Festus a Chance
During last Saturday’s visit to Brother Wolf, I also had the opportunity meet Festus. He has been at the shelter for a very long time.
I believe I understand a little better why he has been passed over. Festus is a large dog. He had a very intelligent look in his eyes and was dying to play. He jumped high into the air, maybe four feet. If you were locked in a small kennel for most of your day, you would be anxious for a long walk too!
Festus seemed to be the perfect dog for an active family with older kids. Or, singles guys listen up – an active guy who would like a hiking buddy. I will tell you guys a little secret: most women LOVE dogs. Festus has an unusual look (one brown eye, one blue eye) that will reel in the ladies.
If you are looking for a chick magnet, drop by Brother Wolf and meet Festus. With any luck, he will finally find a home.

Yorkie Needs a Home
On Saturday, I dropped by Brother Wolf. Even though I am not looking for another dog, I like to stop by from time to time to see the improvements they have been making to the shelter and visit with the animals available for adoption. I am heartbroken over a little Yorkie I met.
He had been surrendered by his owner an hour before I arrived. He was trembling and panting, clearly terrified at this new and confusing situation. He stared pleadingly at me and placed his paw on the kennel door. You could almost hear him thinking, “I do not belong here; I want to go home!”
Even though his current situation is not ideal, he is in the right spot. Brother Wolf will give him a home for the rest of his life. While I do not understand why his owner surrendered him, I am glad he/she took him to a no-kill shelter.
They said he is 2-3 years old and housetrained. He is terrified of cats, so a home without cats is preferred. Since he had just arrived, they did not have any additional information about temperament. He is still intact, which Brother Wolf will remedy prior to adoption.
If you have been looking for a Yorkie, why don’t you give them a call? He is definitely a purebred dog, not that it should matter.
Or if a Yorkie is not your cup of tea, Brother Wolf (and other shelters around the country) has plenty of other dogs for your consideration. Please, consider adopting a shelter pet!

Rusty Needs a Home
I love looking at rescue group websites. Every now and then, a particular dog or cat catches my eye, and I check the site repeatedly to see if he/she found a home. You cheer when it happens.
My latest love is named Rusty. He is a Mini Schnauzer available for adoption at the Avery County Humane Society. Here is the link to their site: averyhumane.org.
Rusty is missing an eye. When he visited the shelter, one of his eyes was in bad shape. The vet confirmed it must be removed. Even so, he is in good spirits and ready for a home. A person at the shelter stated he is housetrained and good with children.
I adopted Gracie from the Avery County Humane Society. At the time, they were crammed into a small building badly in need of expansion/upgrade. Since then, they raised the funds to build a really nice, modern shelter. Why don’t you take a little field trip to Newland and visit Rusty? While he enjoys the plush digs, he would prefer being with you!

P.S.
People adopt pets from all over the country, so don’t let geography be a deterrent!
