As I mentioned in a previous post, Brother Wolf is trying to raise funds for a down payment on the building in which they shelter homeless pets. They are only $20,000 from their goal. They have until May 31 to raise the funds.
They have managed to raise $130,000, which is incredible. They are so close!!! If you can spare a few dollars, they would greatly appreciate it. They do so many good things for the community and do not raise any public funds for their effort. They rely solely on donations from people like you and me.

Dog Show for All Dogs
On Saturday, April 28, Animal Compassion Network is having an interesting fundraiser at the Patton Avenue Pet Company. They are having a “Dog Show for All Dogs” from 12 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for “Best Facial Hair,” “Best Smile,” “Best Tail Wag (Nub & Full Tail),” and other fun categories.

Paws on a Mission
On Saturday, April 28, the Mission Hospital Foundation will hold a fundraiser for its pet therapy program. The event is a walk-a-thon at Carrier Park in West Asheville. Here is the press release if you are interested:

Working Out With Your Pet
We spotted an interesting little article in the USA Weekend newspaper insert. It offers tips for getting an even bigger workout while walking your little buddy. Here is the link:

Gracie’s favorite tip is “carry me!” Angel is relentless. She wants to play, whereas Gracie prefers to be left alone. I sometimes have to carry Gracie all the way back to the house. It provides an excellent work for the arms, shoulders, and core.

Weekend Fun

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. The “Paws 4 Kids” event raises awareness about child abuse. Did you know that, in homes where an animal is abused, other family members are also being abused? Abusers are not species-specific in their torture.
The event has a $10 suggested donation. Kids can participate for free. There will be pet adoptions, a photo booth, raffles, face painting, and more. For more information, visit: Childabusepreventionservices.org.

Run for the Paws and Wagging Wellness Fair

Enjoy live music and food. Kids and dogs can play fun games. Your canine friend can have a nail trim and pick up cool items from the pet vendor display area.

Companion Animal Parasite Council
I saw a segment on a morning talk show about the Companion Animal Parasite Council. They were discussing the early onset of tick season. Here’s a link to the organization’s website: http://www.capcvet.org/.
The Council is organized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It is sponsored by a lot of drug companies that make tick/flea preventatives such as Frontline, so you will not find mention of natural remedies on the site.
You will find information about diseases caused by parasites, such as tick paralysis. I had an encounter with that several years ago when I rescued a stray. The poor pup was literally covered from head to toe in ticks. He could not stand on his hind legs.
After a long bath (that still makes my skin crawl to think about), I managed to remove all of the ticks. The next morning, he dashed out of the crate and ran around the yard. Until that moment, I had no idea ticks could cause such a serious condition.
Another feature of the site is a parasite prevalence map. You can see how high incidents of various infections are in your area. It is useful to view the map if you are visiting another area of the country as well. You would hate for your little buddy to come back with an unwelcome souvenir.
The site offers a lot of technical information about parasites. While it is not the most fascinating reading, it is helpful to know about these little critters that can cause such damage to both your buddy’s health and your own. Just be prepared to take a long shower afterward. Anytime I read about ticks, I feel as if they are crawling all over me!

Full Moon Farm: A Sanctuary
The Asheville area is blessed with dedicated individuals who want to help our furry friends. One such individual is Nancy Brown. In 2002, she founded Full Moon Farm in Black Mountain, NC. In her words, it is “a non-profit rescue group and sanctuary for wolfdogs.”
I have seen Nancy’s wolfdogs at various fundraising events around town. It is absolutely shocking the first time you see one of these beautiful animals. I had no idea they were so LARGE.
